MARY STEINBECK DEKKER'S COPY OF SAINT KATY THE VIRGIN.

STEINBECK, JOHN. 1902-1968. Saint Katy the Virgin. New York: Covici Friede, 1936.
8vo. Publisher's decorated boards, gilt cloth spine printed in red. Without printed "Merry Christmas" slip. Light spotting to front pastedown, light wear to head and tail of spine.
Provenance: gift of John Steinbeck to his sister Mary (ownership signature); by descent.

LIMITED EDITION, number 12 of 199, SIGNED BY STEINBECK and with Mary S. Dekker's ownership signature to front pastedown. According to Steinbeck specialist James Dourgarian, Steinbeck's older sister Elizabeth disapproved heartily of the title of this work, and thus a chastened Steinbeck did not dare present her with an inscribed copy, as he did with all his other titles (see "The Steinbeck Auction of Spring 2007," Steinbeck Review volume 4, number 1, March 2007). Baby sister Mary apparently had no such misgivings. Goldstone & Payne A6a.
