STEINBECK'S FATHER'S COPY OF TO A GOD UNKNOWN.

STEINBECK, JOHN. 1902-1968. To a God Unknown. New York: Robert O. Ballou, 1933.
8vo. Publisher's green cloth, top edge black, lettered in gilt. Spine slightly cocked, cloth with light fading at extremities; paper clip stain to front flap, head and tail of spine bumped, lower panel with smudges and thumbing.
WITH: "The Neatest Trick of the Year." New York: Robert O. Ballou, [1933]. 4 pp pamphlet of reviews laid in, along with two clipping service reviews of the novel.
Provenance: J.E. Steinbeck, Sr. (ownership signature and blindstamp to half-title); by descent to John Steinbeck (ownership signature and blindstamp to half-title); by descent.

FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY STEINBECK, AUTHOR'S FATHER'S COPY. John Steinbeck did not inscribe this book for his father (as he did Cup of Gold), but John Ernst Steinbeck proudly wrote his ownership signature on the half-title and carefully kept the clipping reviews of his son's novel that appeared in regional papers. Interestingly, on the "Books by" page, Steinbeck has removed any mention of his first novel, Cup of Gold, presenting the present work as his second, not third publication. Goldstone & Payne A3a.
