THE PASTURES OF HEAVEN INSCRIBED BY STEINBECK TO HIS LITTLE SISTER, MARY.

STEINBECK, JOHN. 1902-1968. The Pastures of Heaven. New York: Brewer, Warren & Putnam, 1932.
8vo. Publisher's green cloth lettered in gilt, top edge blue, dust jacket. Some offset to flyleaves, dustsoiling, spine slightly cocked, head and tail of spine bumped; jacket with wear at all edges of upper panel, head and tail of spine, and all edges of lower panel, thumbing overall.
Provenance: John Steinbeck, presentation to Mary Dekker Steinbeck (inscription and her ownership signature, 1932); by descent.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on the front pastedown: "For Mary with / Germanic and sentimental / affection / John Steinbeck." The Pastures of Heaven is Steinbeck's second published work, appearing after two years' labor. The work is a series of interconnected short stories about the citizens of a valley in Salinas, CA, a location and universe that Steinbeck would return to repeatedly in future works. It was not particularly well received at the time but did sell modestly and is a work that in later years Steinbeck looked back on with pride. Goldstone & Payne A2a.
