PRESENTATION COPY TO "DOC" BOLIN.

1. STEINBECK, JOHN. 1902-1968. Cup of Gold. New York: Covici Friede, 1936.
8vo. Publisher's red cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Lacking jacket. Spine heavily sunned.
Provenance: John Steinbeck, presentation to Rolf Bolin; returned to John Steinbeck; by descent.

INSCRIBED COPY OF THE SECOND ISSUE: "For Doc Bolini / with beatific regards / Lampanyctus Steinbecki." "Doc" Rolf Bolin was an ichthyologist at Hopkins Marine Station and friend of Steinbeck and Ed Ricketts. In 1939 he named a species of lanternfish for his friend John Steinbeck, "Lampanyctus steinbecki." In a widely circulated story, Bolin named the fish after Steinbeck gave him a copy of Cup of Gold. Soon after, however, Steinbeck inexplicably asked for the book back, and Bolin spent a lifetime trying to re-synthesize the species so Steinbeck's name could be removed. Goldstone & Payne A1b.

2. Another copy. New York: Covici Friede, 1936. Publisher's blue cloth, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, blind stamp of clipper to upper cover, pictorial dust jacket. Front joint split, light rubbing to head and tail of spine jacket, small repair to verso of head of spine jacket, light shelfwear.
Provenance: Margaret Althouse (bookplate); purchased by David Heyler from Steven C. Bernard First Editions, May 21, 1991 (description and receipt laid in); by descent.

Second edition. Goldstone & Payne A1c.
