A carved cinnabar lacquer 'Lychee' box and cover

Ming dynasty, 16th century
Of circular shape, finely carved on the exterior through thick layers of cinnabar lacquer with fruiting branches bearing lychee fruits decorated with various diaper designs and interspersed amidst leafy stems, all reserved on a flowerhead-diaper ground, the interiors lacquered black, 8.3cm diam. (3in diam.)
