The case surmounted by three gilt flame finials and a stepped top, two circular hanging brackets to the back and gilt floral mounts to the front top and bottom with four twisted, brass-capped columns between, raised on four button feet, the front door opened via a square arbor.
The dark blue velvet-covered 7.5 inch rectangular dial with skeletonised gilt Roman and Arabic chapter ring, each minute individually engraved around the edge, with good pierced gilt brass hands enclosed at the top by elaborate floral brass spandrels, the lower mount centred by a scroll signature cartouche floridly engraved Johannes Van Ceulen fecit Hagae, Hollandiae.
The single spring barrel movement with tandem winding, the going train terminating in a verge escapement with silk suspension and cycloidal cheeks to the light pendulum, the strike train with large 3.5 inch external countwheel with elaborate floral piercing and engraved numerals controlling the Dutch system of striking, sounding the half hours on a small low bell, and the full hours on a much larger bell mounted in the upper inside of the case. Ticking with a delicate silk suspension pendulum and a case key.
