From the 1950s to 1960s, Wu Buyun painted a series of works centring on the lives of the working class people in Hong Kong. Not only are they artworks, but they are also important historic records that document the sights and cultures of the time. In Fishing Port, Wu Buyun painted animated scenes of shuttling sampans, fishery activities, and quotidian snapshots of the fishing community. By infusing Chinese ink painting brushwork into oil painting, the artist delineates the various motions of the waves with rhythmically rich brushstrokes. The gleaming light of the harbour is faithfully brought to life by Wu's sensitive use of orange, pink, and varying shades of blue.
