After relocating to the United States in the 1980s, Chen Danqing started the Still Life series. As a natural continuation of this series, Dong Qichang Duet 1 was created in 1998 as a part of the Art Book en Plein Air series. The book on the right shows one of the paintings from Eight Views of Autumn Moods by Dong Qichang. The mechanically reproduced page has now become a hand-painted original. Chen Danqing explained, "I painted these paintings, but they are not my paintings. I may be painting the ambiguous relationships between paintings and printed matters as well as paintings and painters. They are yet to be explored". The search into the interactions between these three entities enriches our understanding of their true nature.
陳丹青於1980年代移居美國，開始發展其「靜物」作品。創作於1998年的《董其昌雙重奏之一》即為在此概念下發展而成的畫冊寫生系列。畫面右方董其昌的《秋興八景圖》由原先機器印刷的複製品，變成人工手繪的原作。陳丹青說: 「這些畫是我畫（動詞）的，又不是我的畫（名詞），我可能在畫「畫」與「印刷品」、「畫」與「畫家」的關係，那是一種曖昧的，有待了解的關係。」透過作品探究三者的關係，富饒深意。
