As one of the most eminent Chinese realism artists who paints in the Classical style, Wang Yidong sensitively rendered the idyllic culture of the Yimeng Mountain region. With his superior oil painting techniques and nuanced brushstrokes, he was able to convey the serene beauty of the young woman in the work. In Sketch for Crepuscule, a preadolescent village girl gingerly carries an oil lamp that appears to be of great sentimental value to her. The way in which she turns around and gazes at the viewer is reminiscent of 17th century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring. Her expression and body language are charming yet subtle. The painting captures the delicate moment when the girl wishes to speak but refrains from doing so. Her cryptic countenance mesmerises the viewers and inspires interpretations.
