Zhang Gong's early works are surrealistic in style and teeming with absurdist humour. Hidden behind the vivid palette and symbolisms is his desire to communicate to viewers his personal sentiments and concerns for the societal transformations in China. Executed in 1995, the composition of Never Rusty Tom is divided into two sections. On the right side, Tom dons a military hat and reads. The lamp shines a light on Tom's face and the book. It both illuminates and metaphorically inspires the protagonist. On the left side, three space-cupids are pulling back their bows. Who in the crowd will be hit by love's arrow? Who will be Tom's companion on his timeless journey into the fantasy world?

Provenance
