Executed in 1996, Zhang Gong painted himself as a child in the Brave Tom series. The artist explained, "Tom is a boy from the global village. He is without nationality. He is bold, and he does not cry when he falls. Things that grown-ups do not allow, he is interested in doing them. He is forever indulging in new things". Zhang Gong conveys his fascination with the unknown through this series of works. Like the child in the pictures who is intently studying books, birds, and phases of the moon, he is equally curious and confounded. However, his inquisitiveness compels him to explore uncharted territories.
