Yang Shaobin was a representative figure of "cynical realism" and "political pop" in the avant-garde art scene in China in the early 1990s. At that time, his paintings often featured authoritative figures. The way of depiction was not to honor or to propaganda but used hysterical representation to overthrow the sense of inviolability and nobility these figures presented in public instead. Created in 1996, a series of small-sized portraiture fully embodies Yang Shaobin's artistic characteristics. The red color indicates the dangerous and tense atmosphere, combined with twisted and exaggerated facial expressions, the inner psychological reactions of the characters, particularly the anger and depression, are expressed and transformed as a sense of violence visually.

楊少斌是九十年代初中國前衛藝壇中「玩世現實主義」和「政治波普」的代表人物。當時他的繪畫經常出現帶有權力象徵意味的人物，不過其描繪手法卻非以寫實或歌頌為目標，反而運用了滑稽可笑的造型去顛覆了大眾心中的神聖感和崇高感，強調了某種反諷的意味。創作於1996年的一系列小型肖像畫充滿了楊少斌的個人特色，以暗喻危險、緊張的紅色為主調，配合扭曲誇張的面貌，表達出人物內在心理反應，特別是有關憤怒和壓抑的情緒，外化為一種視覺上的暴力感。
