As an artist, curator as well as educator, Qiu Zhijie is an active protagonist in Chinese contemporary art. He creates with multifarious mediums, including painting, calligraphy, photography, performance art, and video. He was the curator of the China Pavilion for the Venice Biennale in 2017. His works are also in the collection of the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
Qiu Zhijie's work challenges the viewer with a world of complex visual experience. Blurring all boundaries, brushstrokes in black, grey, and white crisscross to form a coherent whole. Two figures face off against each other, while a third figure behind them on the right appears to exit the picture's red circle. Similar to the image circle of a camera in which only objects inside can come into focus, artist utilises their works to bring attention to pressing issues. This painting employs the imagery of flowing masses to investigate the relationships between space, time, opportunities, and conflicts. It is also a metaphor for the chaos of the information age in contemporary society.
