The present lot is exceptional in its intricacy of form and detail of design with the inspiration from Shang dynasty ritual archaic bronze gui vessel and inlaid decoration from the Warring States period. It was revived and became popular from the Song dynasty onwards when archaism became a predominant style in the production of artefacts. Compare the Ming dynasty gold and silver inlaid bronze incense burner bearing the Hu Wenming mark, included in the exhibition catalogue Arts from the Scholar's Studio, Hong Kong, 1986, no.73. See also an example sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, previously in the collection of Ulrich Hausmann, 7 October 2014, lot 3350.
