The inspiration for the present still life is most likely to be Paul Cézanne's Nature morte à la coupe de fruits, 1879-1880, currently within the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Here, Lebasque extracts the effortless grace and sensuality of Cézanne's quiet composition, employing the master's fusion of geometric and curvilinear forms. Lebasque's homage to Cézanne appears both contemplative and adoring, as the rich tones of his earthen palette gently intermingle with the dappled light and softly ruffled tablecloth.
