Geoffrey Williams (British, 1911-1958)

A Golden Retriever
signed 'Geoffrey/Williams' (lower right)
watercolour
29 x 22.5cm (11 7/16 x 8 7/8in).

Footnotes

Williams often worked in watercolour, but also on varnished wood, not unlike Frances Mabel Hollams. His works were published, including pictures in 'Hutchinsons Book Of The Dog'. He also worked on some books with Ronald Searle, 'The Dog's Ear Book' and 'How to be a Topp'. The latter was a satire on the English public school system and it is in this the name 'Hogwarts' first appeared - now immortalised by J K Rowling, Harry Potter.

Some of Williams' notable paintings of champion dogs included Lorna Countess Howe's Labrador 'Ch Inglestone Ben'; Mrs Crouch's Saluki, 'Ch. Orchard Shahzaman'; Lieut-Colonel Bedford's Long-haired Dachshund, 'Ch. Rose of Armadale'; Mrs Clay's Dalmatian, 'Ch. Lucky James'; McNeil's Borzoi, 'Ch. Miss Mazeppa'; Mr Chapman's Scottish Terrier, 'Ch. Heather Realisation'; and Mr Goodwin's Cairn, 'Ch. Princelo Jester'.
