While many castings of The Scout were made in the Massa foundry, very good posthumous cast's such as the present lot, were cast later in the Marinelli foundry. Duffey notes a description of the present casting as:

'A Boer, covered with a blanket, his rifle easily to hand, his hat clutched off his head and carelessly flung beside him, his unkempt hair lying over his brow, is looking over some boulders presumably into an English camp. The stratification of the rocks is absolutely characteristic of the Transvaal; but the interest of the thing lies in the almost painful eagerness of the eyes and in the strong clutch of the hands on the rock.' (The State (June 1910) in A. E. Duffey, 'Anton Van Wouw, The Smaller Works', (Protea Book House: Pretoria, 2008), p. 84).
