Provenance
A private collection, South Africa.

Extremely rare in the oeuvre of Jacob Pierneef, who was predominantly a landscape artist, the present still life displays objects from African communities such as the small iconographical statue and vessels. This shows Pierneef's intention to supplant himself within the fashionable trend of painting older works of African Art, thematically popular at the time with other artist's such as Picasso and Matisse.

The present lot's paint is thinly applied with faceted brushwork. This assists the subdued palette in imbuing a contrasted sense of light and dark, a technique that equally informs many of his landscape paintings. This muted palette was typical of the artist's work from the early 1940's, therefore the present work could be viewed as a precursor to his landscape works of the following decade.
