Provenance
A private collection, Netherlands.

Investigating the representation of African figures in art, Nedia Were draws focus to the socio-politics that influence beauty and identity. Were challenges traditional notions of identity and translates figurative paintings of today with a present-day lens.

The vibrancy of works such as the present lot are a magnificent display of the artist's ability to translate emotion and tone through colour and composition. Impactful and striking we can gain a sense of the artist's early aesthetic influence in his fascination with cartoons and comic books, recalling the graphic and eye-catching classical nature of the genre. Synthesised with a passion for current affairs and a yearning to contribute to the socio-political commentary of the underrepresented, Were creates these beautifully fluid, strong and present African figures on large scale canvases.
