Footnotes
We are grateful to the late Dr. Klaus Ertz for stating in a letter, dated April 3, 2023, based on large colour photographs, that the present panel is an early work by Adriaen Stalbemt, painted in Antwerp, circa 1610. Although the way in which the landscape is composed of three grounds displays the influence of Jan Brueghel the Elder, Dr. Ertz explained how striking features of Stalbemt's own style can be discerned in this composition from this early creative period of his career. The figures, the small animals and tree stumps, for example, which are shown in a combined river, village and wooded landscape are elements that are found in Stalbemt's works throughout his career.
