A Spanish Or Italian Left-Hand Dagger
Late 17th Century

With sharply tapering blade double-edged over half its length to the point, the back beneath the ricasso notched and bordered along each side by dots, rectangular ricasso punched with small circles and struck with a maker's mark on both sides, a cross potent in a shield, recessed for the thumb on one side, and with a circular hole on each side beneath for sword-breaking, hilt comprising triangular guard with turned edge and set with a triangular panel pierced and chiselled with symmetrical foliage centred on a demi-figure between birds, a guardapolvo on the inside pierced and chiselled with fruiting scrolling foliage, compressed button-shaped pommel with button, and wire-bound grip
