Footnotes

George Harnage joined the navy in 1807 and served in the Leeward Islands from 1818. In 1820 he was given command of the sloop Raleigh and continued to serve in the West Indies until the close of 1821. He returned to England with a freight of $320,000, and was paid off in 1822

Jon Poyyer (or Poyer) was the owner of a sugar plantation in Barbados. His family had owned property there since 1680 and Mt. Poyer in the north of the island is named after them. In 1808 he published The History of Barbados and returned to England in the early 1820s. It is likely that he travelled with Harnage and that they became friends
