Both of regulation pattern, the first with bright etched blade including the presentation inscription, hilt with wire-bound fishskin-covered grip, and complete with bullion sword-knot (frayed), in it original brass-mounted lather scabbard (minor damage), the locket applied with silver royal arms on one side; the second with bright etched blade, hilt engraved with owner's name 'R.A. Cheyne' on the hinged side-guard, wire-bound fishkin-covered grip, and complete with bullion sword-knot, in its original brass-mounted leather scabbard (2)

Lt. Archibald Rider Cheyne, RN (1911-1950) served aboard Submarine HMS H 50 between May and September 1940. On 20 January 1941 whilst en route to Mediterranean to join the submarine depot ship HMS Medway as spare submarine commanding officer, the ship he was aboard, the Dutch merchant vessel Barneveld, was captured by the German pocket battleship Admiral Schear. He spent the remainder of the War in a German POW camp
