A Japanese 60-Bore Matchlock Musket, And Another Of 28-Bore
Edo Period

The first with octagonal block-sighted barrel inlaid in silver with two geometric prosperity symbols in front of the back-sight and with silver-inlaid mon at the breech, brass back-action lock stamped with a maker's mark and with brass serpentine acting against an external brass spring (pan-cover missing), cherrywood full stock inlaid with brass roundels each engraved with a flower-head, the butt with large brass and copper flower-head on one side, a brass Shi-shi on the other, and a silver and brass flower along the back, brass mounts comprising a band around the breech engraved with foliage, trigger-guard, and two barrel bands (one barrel band and ramrod missing); the second of similar form, the breech inlaid in chased copper and brass with a Shi-shi and a blossoming tree, stock inlaid with engraved brass flower-heads, and with a dragon (incomplete on the heel) along the back of the butt, and brass mounts including a band around the breech engraved with a kabuto (barrel with some pitting, stock chipped along the upper side opposite the lock) (2)
