With heavy rebrowned twist sighted barrels signed in full in capitals along the rib at the breeches, border engraved case-hardened breeches each with platinum plug and decorated with a foliate scroll on the rib between, case-hardened tang engraved with symmetrical scrolling foliage, case-hardened flat locks each with decoratively engraved border, signed in capitals and decorated with scrolling foliage, case-hardened dolphin hammers decorated en suite, figured half-stock with chequered grip and fore-end, the latter with dark horn tip, steel mounts retaining some original blueing and comprising butt-plate decorated with foliate scrolls and a scallop shell in the heel tang, trigger-guard with two blackcock within a border en suite with the locks on the bow, case-hardened trigger-plate with foliate engraved pineapple-shaped finial, silver escutcheon engraved with owner's crest and motto, no provision for a ramrod, and retaining some original finish: in original lined and fitted oak case with some accessories including G. & J.W. Hawksley powder-flask with bag-shaped body embossed with fluting, and shot-flask with leather body tooled with hanging game on one side, the interior of the lid with maker's trade label, the exterior with circular vacant brass escutcheon, London proof marks

Joseph 1 Lang is recorded at 7 Haymarket between 1825 and 1852. The business became Joseph Lang & Sons eventually amalgamating with Stephen Grant, and are credited with popularising the pin-fire breech-loader. Lang died in 1869
