Seven Indian Dhals
19th Century And Later

Each of circular convex form, the first of brass, the outer surface decoratively embossed with a crowned sun-in-splendour centred on four crescents each enclosing a tiger attacking a Makara, a lion-head boss between each crescent, all on a ground of symmetrical scrolling flowering foliage against a finely punched background, and with four rings for bracers on the inside; the second of brass, embossed and punched with landscape scenes inhabited by Indian deities in combat, all within a roped outer border; the third of blackened steel, the outer surface with four brass bosses each chased with foliage and centred on a roundel chased with figures and deities, the ground between with various applied figures including those riding camels and mahouts aboard elephants, all within a foliate brass border; the fourth of steel, the outer surface with applied brass roundel, bosses, pierced ovals and crescents all incised with small circles each centred on a dot, and with outer brass border en suite, the interior with red velvet liner and padded bracer; the fifth chased overall with symmetrical designs of panels and cartouches of arabesques, central copper spike and three bosses en suite; the sixth of black lacquered hide set with four copper bosses, a crescent moon and two smaller bosses, the interior with leather-covered pad (damaged); the last of hide in imitation of turtle shell, and with four steel bosses each with hooked quatrefoil border, the interior retaining its leather pad and bracers (7)
