A Very Rare Spanish Gothic Casket

Late 15th/Early 16th Century
With wooden body of rectangular form with domed hinged lid, entirely covered in cuir-boulli (right side partly replaced) tooled with a slashed design on the back and sides, the front tooled with foliage against punched grounds, the lid decorated en suite and involving Gothic inscriptions, blackened iron mounts (minor losses) comprising reinforcing straps with bevelled edges, incised with pairs of lines, secured by iron tacks and with scallop shell terminals, the lid with arched side mounts each pierced with repeated circles and diamonds and with an openwork tower at the corners, the front mount en suite and with hinged hasp with further openwork towers, the central one intended to fit over the keyhole, the lock incised and punched with trelliswork and with a scallop shell at each corner, and slender drop handle of diamond section curved in on both sides
