Fitted and lined in tooled pigskin, retaining its G.& J.W. Hawksley brass-mounted powder-flask with bag-shaped planished tin body, Dixon & Son leather shot-flask with case-hardened nozzle, and two-piece nickel-mounted ramrod, the interior of the lid with maker's trade label (minor loss on one edge), the exterior with circular brass escutcheon engraved '11' and centred on a flush-fitting brass carrying handle

L. Patrick Unsworth, The Early Purdeys, 1996, p. 246. The gun for this case (sold in these Rooms, Antique Arms and Armour, 23 July 2008, lot 303) is recorded as sold on 6 December 1855 for £57.15.0. Unsworth notes 'Extra highly finished with case fitted up complete; extra gold mounting; 'gravitating stops', initials and crest engraved at £6'. The gravitating stops conform to Joseph Manton's British Patent No. 3558 of 1812
