A Venetian Or Dalmatian Shiavona
18th Century

With tapering double-edged blade (old surface pitting) with shallow fuller over each side of the joined forte and struck with two indistinct bladesmith's marks on both sides beyond, characteristic iron guard comprising a fan-shaped arrangement of seven bars, each pinched-in and joined at the top to a wide flat bar with three rows of chevron-like piercings, inner-guard with similar arrangement of leaf-shaped bars each linked together and involving a thumb-ring, curved rear quillon with moulded button terminal, the top of the guard with bent swelling terminal, shield-shaped brass pommel cast with a beaded mask on each side and surmounted by a button, and spirally-bound leather-covered grip
