The present box would appear to be one of the finest of its type, noteworthy for its deep and crisp carving. It follows related 'chun' lacquer boxes and covers first produced during the Jiajing period; see for example from the Qing Court Collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum: Lacquer Wares of the Yuan and Ming Dynasties, Hong Kong, 2006, pl.134.

A similar box with a gilt Qianlong six-character mark but a red lacquered interior in the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in Zhongguo Meishu Quanji: Lacquer, Beijing, vol.8, 1989, pl.172. Another similar box in the National Palace Museum, Taiwan, is illustrated in Gugong qiqi tezhan mulu (A Special Exhibition of Lacquer Wares in the Palace Museum), Taipei, 1981, pl.67.

Compare a slightly larger Qianlong period carved polychrome lacquer 'spring' circular box, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29 May 2019, lot 3128; and one sold in these rooms, 27 November 2014, lot 146.
