Dang Xuan Hoa is widely recognised as one of Vietnam's most important artists of the late 20th century. He is a member of "The Gang of Five", known as the first group of Vietnamese contemporary artists to receive international acclaim in the first half of the 1990s through highly profiled exhibitions and innovative practices. Moreover, he was the first Vietnamese artist to embark on a trip to the United States under the Indochina Arts Project's visiting-artist programme after the lifting of the American embargo in 1994.
Dang Xuan Hoa is well noted for his visually arresting paintings that embrace subjectivity and formal experimentation. His body of work, like a visual autobiography, is inspired by his own experiences and memories. Artist and Model poetically expresses the artist's pure emotion and inner world with naïve brushstrokes and romantic colours. "I paint what I feel, not what I see." Hoa's search for intimacy with the canvas truthfully captures the spirit of humanism and fosters a deeper connection to the artist himself and to the viewer.
