A native of Hanoi, Hong Viet Dung graduated from the Hanoi Fine Arts University in 1984. The artist, together with Dang Xuan Hoa (b. 1959), Pham Quang Vinh (b. 1960), Ha Tri Hieu (b. 1959) and Tran Luong (b. 1960), came to be known as "The Gang of Five"—an artist group which was formed in Hanoi in the late 1980s and gained prominence in the early 1990s.
Best recognised for his depictions of tranquil landscapes and solitary figures, Hong Viet Dung employs a muted colour palette and reductive means to imbue his paintings with an implicit sense of contemplative calmness. The artist has said of his work: "I always paint people and views that surround me. This simple beauty is lyrical. In my paintings, I like to reduce details according to the Eastern Style." Dung's nuanced approach to colours and forms skilfully brings a poetic quality and serene grace to his art. His mastery of essential elements of art making has distinguished himself as one of Vietnam's most renowned contemporary artists.
