Considered one of the most internationally acclaimed artists in Myanmar, U Lun Gywe is well known for his oeuvre depicting the beauty of Myanmar and its people. He graduated from the Art Institute of Specialist Teachers' Training in Yangon in 1954 and studied in China under a one-year cultural exchange programme from 1964 to 1965. In 1971, he was awarded a fellowship in art conservation and made trips to East Berlin, Dresden and Potsdam, where he encountered iconic artworks created in Europe.
Renowned for his skilful use of vibrant colours, dynamic brushwork, and rhythmic composition, U Lun Gywe is heavily influenced by the Impressionist paintings and artists. Both Flower Market and Playing on the Beach perfectly encapsulate the impressionist tendency of the artist and spontaneously capture the fleeting everyday moments of Myanmar's modern life.
