With her iconic style of vibrant colors, dynamic brushstrokes, and innocent girl images, Untitled is the largest work ever being offered in the auction market by the celebrated Japanese contemporary artist Ayako Rokkaku.
Ayako Rokkaku is instantly recognizable for her bright colours and playful compositions. She often depicts female figures with big eyes and elongated arms, expressive facial features that convey various emotions that bring up every protagonist's bold and carefree inner child. In the 2007 work Untitled, colourful flowers display over the white background, surrounded by flowers stands three girls in green, pink, and white dresses — the depiction resonates with the Three Graces in the early European Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli's Primavera. Vividly captures the atmosphere of joy, beauty, and creativity bestowed by nature in this painting.
As a self-taught artist, Rokkaku's painting technique is also unique. Once stated that getting inspired by the imagination and rule-free in children's art, Rokkaku applies acrylic paint directly to the canvas using only her bare fingers and hands. Following the movement of hand gestures, she creates feathery, gentle, light-filled, and yet free strokes. The long lines are reminiscent of Impressionist artist Claude Monet's rapid and rough strokes. Rokkaku's performance-like painting method adds to the dynamic quality of her painting. As the artist herself has said: "I just remember this squishy, squelchy mess of paint all over my hands... I don't feel I'm really painting unless my hands are in direct contact with the paint. It's more fun that way".
Ayako Rokkaku is a talented artist whose vibrant paintings and unique approach to art build a variegated dreamy world and have earned her a place in today's international art world.
