Asian Art

Selected from Lifetime Collections | Bonhams Skinner
27 March 2023 | starting at 10:00 EDT

We are often touched by tales of unexpected, pioneering art collectors and amazed at their expertise, refined tastes, and keen artistic senses. Not always the exclusive pursuit of the wealthy elite, art collecting is more widely appreciated, as our March auctions hope to demonstrate.

In our March 27th Live sale, Asian Art: Selected from Lifetime Collections, we are thrilled to present the collection of Milton Drexel (Rex) Rutherford, a military veteran who worked on the Subway excavation in Chicago, later in his career, a customer of his business gave him a piece of Asian art, sparking a life dedicated to collecting, honing in on important examples of Japanese metalwork and lacquer, as well as exceptional Kangxi ceramics.

Other collections include pieces belonging to an immigrant who focused on selecting rare ancient Chinese metalworks, Yixing wares from a collector who was inspired by and dedicated his life to the beauty of the clay teapot, unusual finds from a lifetime dealer of Japanese paintings and prints, and Chinese ceramics from a refined personal collection.

Previews for the March 27th live auction in Boston will be held in our Boston Gallery on March 22nd, 23rd, and 24th.
