Provenance
Acquired directly from the Abuja Pottery Training Centre circa 1962-63 by the current owner;
A private collection.
The present lot is an unusual example of Ladi Kwali's work. Possibly the result of a collaboration with Michael Cardew, the finish of the work is more typical of his use of Abuja Zircon glaze and applied cobalt blue brushwork. This pot holds a strikingly rare position in Ladi Kwali's ouvre given that it differs from her traditional decorative Gwari etching style.
The glaze of this work is described by John Edgeler as 'Abuja Zircon' and initially developed at Wenford Bridge Pottery centre in Cornwall in 1949-1951. This style of glaze was introduced by Cardew when he came to Abuja, navigating his style within his new environment.
