The richness of the present work in glaze and decoration articulates the impactful nature of this charger. Large in scale, the sgraffito decoration is bold and elongated, responding to the form of the charger. Applied onto a pale fabric, known as a 'Body 44', a celadon green finish prevails following the application of a black slip and 'AA' glaze. This glaze's formula originated from an evolved Chinese porcelain glaze, deemed 'truthful' by Michael Cardew due to its translucent celadon finish. Likely fired in a saggar to protect the charger's ware, the present lot is an example of a highly successfully formulated charger.
