Provenance
Acquired by Klaus Stephan and Nina Fischer-Stephan in Abuja circa 1960s;
Purchased at Bonhams in 2014;
A private collection.
Documented by Edgeler as joining the Training Centre in 1963, Asibi Ido is classed, along with the other female potters such as Ladi Kwali, Kande Ushafa, and Lami Toto, as one of the most prominent potter's of the centre. This was evident when one of her pots was presented to President Azikiwe when he visited the centre and further upon her visit to Britain in 1989 with Michael O'Brien.
The present lot embodies key elements of Abuja pottery, from the Abuja Jun glazing in a wonderfully high-fired oxidised blue, to the zoomorphic and plant representation etchings that encompass the present work across the drum of the vessel. Synthesizing the adapted shape from Gwari traditional forms of water vessels, to the female potters modern and more decorative adaptation, the present work is a prime example of modern Abuja pottery.
