FIRST PRINTING OF NEW TESTAMENT IN HAWAIIAN.

Ka Euanelio a Mataio, a Marako, a Ioane. Rochester, N.Y., Paiia I Ka Mea Pai Palapala a Lumiki, 1828-1829. 12mo, plain brown cloth. Contains Hawaiian translations of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and John. Missing the Gospel of Luke but continuously paginated from 3 to 171. With separate title pages for each Gospel.

This translation was made under the auspices of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions by Hiram Bingham, Asa Thurston, Artemas Bishop, and others. The first printing of the New Testament in the Hawaiian language was in 1835 in Oahu. This Rochester edition containing only the Gospels is the first printing anywhere of Hawaiian translations of Holy Scripture and is extremely scarce.
