[ROWLANDSON, THOMAS. 1756-1827.] QUIZ [PSEUD.].

The Grand Master, or, Adventures of Qui Hi? in Hindostan. London: Thomas Tegg, 1816. 8vo, full red morocco gilt, rebacked, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, hand-colored pictorial title page, folding hand-colored frontispiece ("A New Map of India from the Latest Authority"), 26 aquatint illustrations, all hand-colored except for one which is tinted sepia. In custom clamshell case.

"A Hudibrastic poem in eight cantos by Quiz. Illustrated with engravings by Rowlandson." The poem is a satire of British misrule in India, directed particularly against Lord Moire, Marquis of Hastings, who was Governor-General of India at the time. The pseudonymous author may have been William Combe (1742-1823), who collaborated with Rowlandson on the "Doctor Syntax" series.

"Qui hi" is an Anglicized version of the Hindi/Urdu Koi hai, meaning "Is anyone there?" In British India, the phrase was commonly used by British residents to summon servants and was satirically extended by other Europeans to apply to the English themselves.
