EINSTEIN, ALBERT. 1879-1955.

Typed card signed. Card, 3 1/2 x 4 1/2 in., typed on one side and signed in ink beneath, "A. Einstein," with original envelope postmarked June 16 [the "6" is unclear], 1953, and with Einstein's return address of 112 Mercer St., Princeton, N.J., plus a carbon copy of the letter to which Einstein's card was a response. The date "6-7-53" is written on the card at lower left in green pencil.

The letter-writer, Celia A. Neiman of New York City, a retired psychiatric social worker, asked Einstein, "What, in a scientific sense, could be the nature of human emotion?" with particular emphasis on the power of hatred. The great physicist gnomically replied, "Practice makes a master / Practice makes a hater / Practice makes one a friend towards people / It only depends that the creature is treated in such a way that it gets practice of the right sort."
