[KELMSCOTT PRESS; WILLIAM HARCOURT HOOPER (1834-1912)]

BEECHWOOD, WARWICK. The Friends and Other Poems. London: Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1854. 12mo, dark green morocco with gilt decoration, title and author gilt to spine, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, bookplate of William Harcourt Hooper. Illustrated in the margins of most of the pages with pen drawings, which are attributed to Hooper by a penciled note on the verso of the ffep: "With nearly 200 humorous Pen-and-Ink Sketches by W.H. Hooper." Title page has a blind stamp stating, "Presented by the publishers."

Hooper was a wood-engraver who worked for many publishers, most notably William Morris' Kelmscott Press, where he executed Edward Burne-Jones' designs for The Works of Geoffrey Chaucer. He also engraved for the Ashendene Press and the Essex House Press.
