AUDUBON, JOHN JAMES. 1785-1851.

The Birds of America, from Drawings Made in the United States and their Territories., first edition, 7 vols., 8vo (10 1/4 x 6 1/2 in.), illustrated throughout with 499 colored lithographs (out of 500; American Flamingo, Pl. 375, is missing) with tissue guards, half-titles and subscriber lists present in each volume, contemporary full black morocco with gilt ruling and turn-ins, all edges gilt, title, author, and volume number gilt to spines. Front and rear hinges of vol. I and front hinges of vols. II and III separating toward bottom; front cover of vol. V detached and top portion of spine of vol. V partly detached, with a closed tear; vols. VI and VII have repaired hinges with modern marbled endpapers rather than the yellow endpapers of the other volumes; faint offsetting or seeping of type onto some prints from behind; Pl. 454, Dusky Albatross, has tape stains and toning from a magazine clipping taped to the verso and the word "over" written in ink in the lower right corner of the recto; Plates 17-21 lack attribution texts ("Drawn from Nature..." and "Lith'd Printed & Col'd..."); half-inch-sized piece missing from right margin of page 131.

As noted in a 19th-century pencil inscription in vol. I, this set belonged to an original subscriber, Gorham Brooks of Massachusetts, and all volumes have the bookplate of a 20th-century descendant, also named Gorham Brooks., New York: by J.J. Audubon [and] Philadelphia: by J.B. Chevalier, 1840-1844.
