Fine Carpets & Rare Textiles | Bonhams Skinner

2 – 12 October 2023 | starting at 12:00 EDT

Bonhams Skinner is excited to host another auction of Fine Carpets and Rare Textiles. Here we offer a multi-consignor auction with a wide array of antique material for collectors, dealers, decorators, and general enthusiasts of woven art. You will find beautiful Serapi and Bakshaish carpets, colourful Caucasian rugs, and wide array of antique rugs and textiles from many other regions too. You will also find a number of rare and highly collectible textiles to compliment the rugs and carpets in the auction.

We are pleased to offer several different pieces from the highly regarded Jim Dixon Collection of rugs and textiles. Dixon was one of the most important rug collectors in recent history, and his pieces all stand out for their beauty and historical significance. Every piece we offer from the Dixon collection will be marked with its provenance in the auction description.

We are also presenting many collectible rugs from the Sharon and Jack Fenlon Collection of rugs and textiles. Sharon Fenlon was president of the American Conference of Oriental Carpets and programme director of the Chicago Oriental Rug and Textile society. We present many pieces form her interesting collection in this auction. Each piece from the Fenlon collection will also be marked with its provenance in the auction description.

We are proud to be offering a small collection of early American hooked rugs in this auction. These are beautiful pieces of folk art, and some date back to before the U.S Civil War. It's truly unusual to find so many early hooked rugs for sale in an auction.

We round out this sale with several excellent and rare textiles. You will find beautiful embroideries, textiles from the Balkans, India, and the Middle East, and an important and enormous Egyptian wedding tent in very good condition. The tent is approximately 16 feet tall and decorated in lavish cotton applique utilising traditional Islamic geometric ornamentation and poetic inscriptions in Quranic Arabic. It's not often that authentic Egyptian wedding tents of such age show up at an auction.

Collectors, dealers, decorators, and general aficionados of woven art will all be delighted by the offerings in our Fine Carpets and Rare textiles auction. The auction runs online from October 2-12. Previews will be held at our Marlborough gallery on October 10, 11, and 12 from 10:00 until 4:00 pm.
