41 1/2 in., .72 caliber round barrel marked on the left side of the breech with an eagle's head over "P" in a sunken cartouche, "US" in a sunken cartouche and "No 1831"; flat lock plate with pointed tail marked "HARPERS/FERRY/1802" and below the pan with a spread wing eagle over "US," the inside of the plate marked "13" and "V" and the edge of the plate with "II" assembly number; walnut stock, the right and left sides of the butt branded "J.SMITH"; iron furniture of proper form, the trigger guard with pointed finial and the top of the butt plate tang marked "No 1831," with sling swivels but lacking a rammer.
