Described by National Geographic as "the man who made time stand still," Harold "Doc" Edgerton was an engineer and scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who developed a strobe flash, called a stroboscope, that enabled him to photographically freeze the motion of a bird in flight, a bullet piercing an apple, and other high-speed actions.
