John Ford Clymer's career as an illustrator began when he sold his first artworks to Colt Firearms Company at the age of 16. He later worked as an illustrator for billboards and as a sign painter in Vancouver while traveling throughout the Pacific Northwest and Canada. In 1930, he ventured to the East Coast, enrolling first at the Wilmington Academy of Art in Delaware where he encountered the work of N.C. Wyeth, and later at the Grand Central School of Art in New York. His publication credits included The Saturday Evening Post, True, Field and Stream, the American Cyanamid Company's calendars, and advertisements for the New England Life Insurance Company. During World War II, Clymer was stationed in Washington, DC, where he painted illustrations for the Marine Corps Gazette and Leatherneck magazine. By 1963, Clymer had painted over 80 covers for The Saturday Evening Post. Always interested in scenes of typical American life, like the one he depicted here (possibly an illustration for The Saturday Evening Post), Clymer finally returned to the West in 1966, settling in Jackson Hole where he continued to paint the local people and landscape.
