Footnotes

N.B.
A classically trained painter who studied in the American Midwest and in France, De Scott Evans achieved success primarily for his depictions of elegant women. Born David Scott Evans, Jr., the artist used several shortened versions of his name, including D.S. Evans, D. Scott Evans, and eventually De Scott Evans. For his trompe l'oeil compositions he altered his name further, using the pseudonyms Scott David, Stanley S. David, and S.S. David, perhaps to avoid negative criticism for this more vernacular style of painting.
