William Matthews befriended Irish poet Michael McDermott at McDermott's farm just outside of Donegal while traveling through Ireland with Hal Cannon, the Executive Director and Founder of the National Western Folklife Center in Elko, Nevada. Matthews and Cannon invited McDermott to the 1997 Cowboy Poetry Gathering at the Center, and Matthews created this work in acknowledgment of the friendship.
