Naushon Island, the largest of the Elizabeth Islands in Vineyard Sound, just off of Wood's Hole, Massachusetts, was Gifford's birthplace. The tiny island's landscape featured regularly in his drawings, etchings, and paintings. Painted in 1901, this work corresponds with the artist's sketch books from that year in the collection of the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
